What it is

Chameleon is a product adoption platform — Tours, Tooltips, Microsurveys, Launchers, Banners, Checklists, and a HelpBar search widget that you build and target without shipping code. It is the design-led pick in the digital adoption category: where Pendo leans analytics-first and Whatfix aims at enterprise DAP rollouts, Chameleon’s differentiator is that its widgets look like your product. Full custom CSS, no forced “made with” chrome on paid tiers, and the closest thing in the category to pixel control.

Through 2026 Chameleon rebuilt around four named agents rather than one assistant. Copilot builds, audits, and A/B-tests experiences, and gained scheduled runs in July 2026 and account memory in August 2026. Ranger flags high-exit experiences, stale audiences, and styles that fail contrast. Compass and Prism, both marked beta on the plans page, cover where users get stuck and per-user personalization. An MCP server shipped in June 2026 and is listed on Pro, Growth, and Enterprise, so the agent layer is reachable from Claude, ChatGPT, or Slack instead of only the Chameleon dashboard.

Why it shows up in Customer Success stacks

  • It owns the in-product layer CS doesn’t otherwise touch. CSMs work in Gainsight, Vitally, or Totango for health scores and playbooks; none of them render a tooltip inside the customer’s app. Chameleon is the surface that turns a CS feature-adoption goal into something users see at the moment it matters.
  • Microsurveys feed the health signal. In-app NPS, CSAT, and CES surveys fire on real usage events and pipe back to the CS platform, so the adoption signal and the sentiment signal land where CSMs already work.
  • Design quality lowers the internal fight. Product and brand teams veto adoption tooling that looks bolted-on. Chameleon’s CSS control is why it survives that review where cheaper tools get killed.
  • No-code targeting. CS and product ops build and segment experiences without an engineering ticket, so an onboarding-flow change is same-day rather than next-sprint.

Pricing

Chameleon publishes list prices on the plans page, and the meter is Monthly Tracked Users — uniquely identified profiles sent to Chameleon in the prior 30 days.

  • Startup — from $279/mo for 2,000 MTUs; 10 live experiences, customization and targeting, email support
  • Pro — from $750/mo for 5,000 MTUs, self-serve, billed monthly by credit card; up to 20 live experiences, Copilot, custom CSS, A/B testing, 5-language localization, 10 seats
  • Growth — from $1,250/mo for 5,000 MTUs, billed annually by ACH with sales assistance; unlimited experiences, Ranger, the governance suite, AI Interactive Demos, HelpBar, a dedicated CSM, 15 seats
  • Enterprise — custom; all roles and permissions, unlimited localization, account-switching, redlined MSA, $5,000/yr per additional account

The 14-day trial runs at full Enterprise access and asks for no card.

Two add-ons move the real number more than the headline does. SAML 2.0 SSO is $400/mo on Pro — a 53% surcharge on a $750 plan — or $4,000/yr on Growth and Enterprise. Extra seats are $300/mo per five on Pro and $3,000/yr per five on Growth.

The old Startup-to-Growth cliff is gone. Pro now sits between them at 2.7x the Startup price for 2.5x the MTUs, so that step tracks usage rather than a feature wall. The step that costs is Pro to Growth: 67% more at identical 5,000 MTUs, and what you buy is Ranger, HelpBar, unlimited experiences, and a CSM — not more users. Signed contracts land well above list, because MTU counts do: Vendr puts the median at $25,750/yr across 38 purchases, in a $15,250-$80,750 range.

Best for

CS and product teams at 50-500-employee SaaS companies where brand and design standards are high enough that a generic overlay would get vetoed, and where in-app onboarding is owned jointly by CS and product ops rather than by engineering. Under 2,000 MTUs, Startup is the cheapest way in this category to ship a fully branded flow inside a week.

Watch-outs

  • MTU pricing punishes high-traffic freemium and PLG products. A large free tier inflates the meter without inflating revenue. Guard by counting identified profiles across your last 30 days before you sign, then price the tier that count actually lands in rather than the Startup teaser.
  • It is a presentation layer, not a system of record. Chameleon renders guidance and collects survey responses; it will not replace Gainsight, Vitally, or Totango for health scoring or playbook orchestration. Guard by wiring survey and adoption events into your CS platform on day one so the signal is not stranded.
  • SSO and seats are metered separately. At Pro, the $400/mo SSO add-on turns a $750 plan into $1,150 before the first extra seat block, which is 92% of the Growth list price. Guard by pricing SSO and your real seat count into the comparison — it usually closes most of the gap to Growth, and Growth includes the CSM.
  • Rate limits and environments are capped below Enterprise. Pro and Growth both allow 2 rate limits and 4 environments; only Enterprise lifts either. Guard by mapping your dev, staging, QA, and production environments against that 4 before committing to an annual term.
  • Cheaper and analytics-heavier alternatives exist. Pendo is free to 500 MAUs and the stronger pick when adoption analytics is the primary value and guidance is second; Userpilot is the faster-moving mid-market entrant and publishes flat pricing; Appcues competes on setup speed. Choose Chameleon when design fidelity is what decides the deal.
