What it is

Marketing Cloud Account Engagement is Salesforce’s B2B marketing automation product, sold as Pardot until the 2022 rename and still called Pardot by most admins. It covers email, forms, form handlers, landing pages, Engagement Studio nurture programs, and prospect grading and scoring, and it writes all of that activity back to Leads, Contacts, and Campaigns in Salesforce. Its whole case rests on one fact: for a Sales Cloud org, it is the marketing automation tool with the shortest path to the CRM, because Salesforce owns both ends of the sync and user logins already run through Salesforce.

Is it being sunset? No end-of-life date has been announced, and Salesforce still sells it. But the investment has moved. Salesforce now sells every edition with a ”+” suffix: Account Engagement+ gives customers access to Marketing Cloud Next, Salesforce’s newer agent-led marketing platform built on Data 360 and Flow, through permission set licenses. Salesforce Ben’s Summer ‘26 review (April 2026) found that Account Engagement got “little more than minor maintenance-level updates” and called the product “nearing the end of its shelf life.” Salesforce now also groups its marketing products under an Agentforce Marketing umbrella, but it has not renamed Account Engagement itself.

The scoped use case

A demand-gen team of two to five people at a B2B company on Sales Cloud Enterprise Edition, with 10,000 to 75,000 marketing prospects, one product line or a small number of business units, and a lifecycle of the form web form → grade and score → MQL assignment → nurture until sales-ready. Sales reps live in Salesforce and want to see each prospect’s email and page activity on the Lead record without a second login. A router such as LeanData or Chili Piper picks up the synced Lead the moment Account Engagement flips it to MQL.

Pricing reality

Unlike Marketo, Salesforce publishes list prices, per org per month and billed annually (checked 2026-10-24): Growth+ $1,250, Plus+ $2,750, Advanced+ $4,400, and Premium+ $15,000. Growth+ through Advanced+ include 10,000 contacts; Premium+ includes 75,000. Growth+ caps forms, form handlers, and landing pages at 50 each. Plus+ adds AI-powered scoring and B2B Marketing Analytics. Advanced+ adds business units and a dedicated IP.

The list price is the floor, not the bill. Extra contacts run $100 per 10,000 per month, so a 50,000-contact database on Plus+ lists at about $3,150/month, or roughly $38,000/year. Common add-ons include B2B Marketing Analytics Plus at $3,000 per user per month and Sales Emails and Alerts at $50 per user per month. The Marketing Cloud Next features that come with the ”+” editions are metered: you buy Einstein Request, Messaging, and Data 360 credits to use them. Add an implementation partner for a first-time setup, and treat any Account Engagement quote as the licence line in a larger budget.

Best for

Marketing ops and demand-gen leads at Salesforce-centric B2B companies, roughly 50 to 1,000 employees, who need lead scoring, nurture, and CRM-visible engagement history without hiring a full-time marketing automation engineer.

Not for you if your CRM is not Salesforce, or if you are starting fresh in 2026. A net-new buyer should get a Marketing Cloud Next quote alongside an Account Engagement one before signing a multi-year term on the product Salesforce is investing in least.

Versus the alternatives

  • Adobe Marketo Engage — Account Engagement’s main rival in enterprise B2B. Pick Marketo when you need a more programmable campaign engine (Smart Campaigns, program tokens, partitions across many business units), Microsoft Dynamics support, or a vendor-hosted MCP server today. Pick Account Engagement when Salesforce is the CRM, your logic fits Engagement Studio, and you want published pricing: Marketo is quote-only, with third-party estimates starting at about $14,000/year for Growth before admin cost.
  • HubSpot Marketing Hub — the leader by customer count and the usual alternative at renewal. Pick HubSpot when you would move the CRM too, or when time-to-value and UX outrank Salesforce-native reporting: Professional runs about $890/month for 2,000 marketing contacts. Pick Account Engagement when the sales team will stay in Salesforce and you do not want to run a second CRM sync.
  • Marketing Cloud Next — the fastest-growing option in this category is Salesforce’s own successor. It runs on Data 360 and Flow and gets the agent features first (Agentforce Campaign Creation, the Account Nurturing Agent). Pick it as a net-new Salesforce buyer, or when you need SMS, WhatsApp, or segmentation on Data 360 profiles. Stay on classic Account Engagement when your current nurture programs work and you have no budget for credits or a rebuild.

Watch-outs

  • The API is tight for agent and enrichment workloads. Salesforce documents daily request limits of 25,000 on Growth, 50,000 on Plus, and 100,000 on Advanced and Premium, with five concurrent requests per account; calls over the cap fail with error code 122. Your enrichment tools, sync middleware, and any third-party MCP connector all draw on that pool. Guard: give each integration its own integration user, batch exports through the v5 export API, and check usage before scheduling a full-database job.
  • No first-party MCP server for Account Engagement. Salesforce’s hosted MCP servers cover CRM objects, and Marketing Cloud Engagement got an MCP server in Summer ‘26, but Account Engagement prospect, list, and Engagement Studio assets are reachable only through third-party connectors such as CData’s. Guard: point AI assistants at the synced Lead, Contact, and Campaign records in Salesforce, keep any third-party connector read-only, and do not plan an agent-driven program build on Account Engagement.
  • Roadmap risk on a multi-year term. New capability now ships to Marketing Cloud Next first, and the ”+” editions meter those features through credits. Guard: sign one-year or two-year terms, ask your account executive in writing what happens to your edition and price if you move to Next, and pilot one nurture flow on Next before the renewal date.
  • Business units are an Advanced+ feature. Each business unit has its own prospect database, connector, and tracker domain, so splitting regions later is a migration, not a setting. Guard: decide on your business-unit design before the first import, and budget for Advanced+ if you will have more than one brand or region.
