This is the largest enterprise ATS pairing in the category, and it is not an ATS bake-off. Workday Recruiting is a module of the system that already holds your worker record, org chart and position budgets. Greenhouse is a standalone ATS that has spent a decade making hiring managers evaluate candidates the same way twice. The routing question is not which product is better at recruiting — Greenhouse wins that on the merits and no honest Workday reference call will argue otherwise. It is whether your hiring problem lives in systems architecture or in hiring-manager behavior, and whether Workday HCM is already signed.

Pricing: the gap is a decision, not a discount
Neither vendor publishes a price. Greenhouse bills per employee, so cost scales with headcount rather than recruiter count; buyer-reported Vendr data puts the median annual contract at $26,646 across 866 purchases, in a range of $10,215–$75,125.
Workday’s full suite with financials and recruiting is quoted at $80–150 per employee per month. Annual software lands at $150–300K under 500 employees, $300–500K at 500–2,500, and $500K–1.5M at 2,500–10,000. Implementation adds $300–800K in year one, which is 100–200% of the annual subscription. The initial term is three years with a 60–90 day opt-out, escalators of 3–5% a year with documented cases at 9%, and full-time-equivalent billing that counts part-timers at 25% and contingent workers at 15–65%.
At 2,500 employees, Workday’s software line alone is roughly 11–19x Greenhouse’s median contract. That ratio is only a fair comparison if you are buying the suite in order to get an ATS — a $300K implementation aimed at a $60K problem. The real comparison runs the other way: if Workday HCM is already signed, the incremental cost of Recruiting is a module plus agent credits, and the alternative is a $26,646 median contract for a second system plus the integration that keeps the worker record in sync. Per-call API metering is what turns that integration into a variable line nobody costed at signature.
Price the tier, not the logo
Greenhouse’s ladder is Core, Plus and Pro. Real Talent Matching sits in Core. Fraud and spam detection, CLEAR ID verification, Sourcing Automation, texting and the Business Intelligence Connector start at Plus. Enterprise Real Talent features, unlimited CRM events, audit log and the developer sandbox are Pro. If fraud control is the reason you are choosing Greenhouse over Workday, then Plus is your floor — get the Plus quote, because a Core quote prices a product that does not include the thing you came for.
Two API deadlines for the same budget line
Greenhouse’s Harvest API v1 and v2 stop working after August 31, 2026; every integration built on Basic Auth against those versions has to move to Harvest v3, which uses OAuth 2.0 with bearer JWTs and cursor-based pagination. Guard: inventory every consumer of your Harvest key — assessment vendors, BI jobs, the offer-letter script someone wrote in 2022 — and confirm a v3 build for each before the cutoff.
Workday’s mirror-image problem is that APIs external platforms call are now metered per call, so scheduled syncs carry a price they did not carry before. Guard: pull 30 days of call volume by consuming system before your next true-up, move high-frequency polling to event-driven pulls, and get the metering rate and included allowance onto the order form.

Verdict
If you cannot decide, default to Greenhouse. The suite argument is real but conditional — it depends on an HCM decision made for other reasons — while the structured-hiring argument holds on its own. Teams that buy Workday Recruiting because the HCM was already there stay happy; teams that buy the suite in order to get its ATS learn otherwise at the year-one implementation invoice.
