What it is

HiringThing is a small-business applicant tracking system (ATS) with onboarding, built in Pennsylvania and on the market since 2012. It is sold two ways. Employers buy it directly. Software and service companies (HR and payroll platforms, staffing firms, franchise systems, vertical ERPs) license it as a white-label ATS and resell it under their own brand and URL. The second channel is the bigger one: the company says it has 100+ partners powering 20,000+ client organizations. If you have used the hiring module inside an HR or payroll product without ever seeing the HiringThing name, that may have been it. Trimble’s Viewpoint Spectrum construction ERP, for example, documents HiringThing as its applicant-tracking module.

It is a small, independent vendor. CB Insights lists about $1M raised in total and no acquisition. In 2026 it rebuilt the product in two steps. On 15 June it shipped a new platform with a visual candidate pipeline, AI Candidate Ranking and workflow management, plus a new Essential and Pro plan ladder. On 14 October it announced an MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Cursor or any other MCP client can operate the ATS through one endpoint.

Why it shows up in recruiting stacks

  • It is one of the few SMB ATS products an agent can drive. The MCP server is built on HiringThing’s existing open API, and the agent works inside the permissions already set in the account rather than getting new ones. An admin issues one credential set and can revoke it at any time. Of the SMB peers we cover, Workable, JazzHR and Breezy HR had no MCP server when we checked them. Access is limited to partners and Pro customers.
  • White-label is the core product, not an add-on. A payroll, PEO or staffing platform that wants to sell hiring without building an ATS can put HiringThing behind its own brand, with an open API, webhooks and single sign-on. HiringThing says a partner goes live “in weeks, not months.”
  • Unlimited users on every plan. Hiring managers, interviewers and location managers all get logins without a seat count.
  • AI ranking you can inspect. AI Candidate Ranking reads the job title and description (at least 200 characters) and generates up to 25 weighted criteria. You can edit them and add more, up to 50 per job, each weighted 1-10. Each applicant gets points, a percentage match, and a Weak / Moderate / Strong label, with the AI’s reasoning and the resume evidence behind each criterion.

Pricing

Checked on hiringthing.com/product/pricing 2026-10-26:

  • Essential — from $80/month. Unlimited users, reports, customizable workflows, background-check integration, EOE and OFCCP data collection.
  • Pro — price not published. Aimed at high-volume and multi-location employers. It is the plan that includes MCP access.
  • Add-ons — sponsored job postings, background checks, and Form I-9 and E-Verify are billed on top.
  • Trial — 14 days, up to 5 active jobs.

Plans are sized by active jobs, meaning postings you are hiring against right now. Archiving a filled job frees the slot and keeps its applicants. Annual billing is available, and you can cancel from the Account Details page.

Between 5 and 12 October 2026 HiringThing repackaged its pricing. Onboarding was a separate product from $100/month, with ATS from $76/month and a bundle from $130/month. Onboarding now sits inside the ATS plans.

The real-world band: about $960/year for Essential. Pro is quote-only. The last published Pro list price, before the June 2026 relaunch, was $310/month for 30 active jobs (about $3,700/year). Use that as your negotiating anchor and get the active-job cap in writing. White-label partner pricing is not published and is set after a discovery call.

Best for

Two buyers. The first is an HR generalist or operations lead at a 20-300 person, multi-location or hourly-hiring business who wants onboarding and I-9 in the same tool. They should plan to run AI agents against it: posting jobs, triaging applicants or drafting updates from Claude or ChatGPT. The second is a product or partnerships lead at a payroll, PEO, staffing or vertical-software company who needs a white-label ATS to resell.

Not for: teams with a dedicated recruiter hiring knowledge workers at volume, or anyone who needs a sourcing database, structured interview kits or deep funnel analytics. That is Ashby or Greenhouse territory.

Versus the alternatives

  • Workable — the SMB market-share leader. Standard starts at $299/month on annual billing and the price rises with employee count. Pick Workable when you need a passive-candidate sourcing database and more mature AI. Pick HiringThing when the bill must stay under $1,500/year or you need agent access.
  • BambooHR — the other volume leader, with hiring built into the HRIS. Pick it when you are buying an HRIS anyway. Pick HiringThing when payroll and HR already live elsewhere, or inside a partner platform that resells HiringThing.
  • Ashby — the fastest-growing ATS entrant, and the stronger agent story. Its MCP server is on every plan and uses per-user OAuth. Pick Ashby when hiring is recruiter-led and analytics matter, and expect a much larger bill.
  • JazzHR and Breezy HR — the closest flat-price peers (JazzHR Hero $1,000/year, Breezy Startup $157/month). Pick them for more job-board reach and a larger review base. Pick HiringThing for white-label, MCP or bundled onboarding.
  • Manatal — pick it if you want MCP access at a published price (Enterprise Plus, $55/user/month, so about $3,300/year for five seats) and a recruiting CRM for agency work.

Watch-outs

  • MCP is gated to Pro, and the credential is shared. One credential set means an agent acts with that account’s full permissions, not per user. Guard: create a dedicated HiringThing user with the narrowest role the agent needs, issue the MCP credential to that user, and revoke it whenever the agent’s job changes.
  • AI scores freeze when criteria change. Edits to ranking criteria apply only to new applicants, so a pipeline can hold scores from two rubrics. Guard: lock the criteria before posting. If you must change them, note the date on the job and rescore manually or compare only within each batch.
  • AI ranking shifts compliance onto you. HiringThing’s own help docs say ranking supports screening and should not be the sole basis for a decision. Under NYC LL 144 and similar rules, the audit and notice duties sit with the employer. Guard: keep a human review on every rejection and check with counsel before scoring roles in regulated jurisdictions.
  • Small vendor, small review base. Capterra shows 4.5 from 91 reviews. Older reviews call search weak and workflow customization thin. Most of those reviews predate the June 2026 rebuild. Guard: test search and stage customization on your real job mix in the 14-day trial. Prefer annual over multi-year terms, and confirm in the order form that you can export candidate data in full.
  • Pro is quote-only. You cannot compare the plan that unlocks MCP without a sales call. Guard: ask for the Pro price, the active-job cap and MCP rate limits in writing before the trial ends.
